Looking for a job, planning a side hustle, or just want a clearer head about money? The free and low-cost courses below give you practical skills South African employers and customers are willing to pay for.
Why Upskilling Matters for Grant Beneficiaries
SASSA was always designed as a safety net, not a salary. The monthly amount on most grant types isn't enough to cover full living costs on its own, and the figures are reviewed annually under the national budget so they can shift.
Picking up a skill even a fairly basic one opens the door to a second income stream alongside the grant. A handful of weekly hours doing digital freelance work, a sewing business run from home, or a part-time call-centre shift can typically add R1,000 to R5,000 per month on top of the grant. Stretched across a year, that adds up to real financial breathing room.
💻 Digital skills
IT support, data, marketing work that runs from any internet-enabled phone or laptop, anywhere in SA.
🔧 Trade skills
Plumbing, electrical, beauty, baking always needed locally and impossible to outsource overseas.
The good news: many of the courses below are completely free for South Africans funded through SETAs, by global tech companies (Google, Microsoft, Meta), or made accessible via Coursera financial aid. You don't need a single rand to start learning.
